The Four Zoas, as William Blake revealed to us two centuries ago, are Tharmas, representing instinct and strength; Urizen, intellect; a cruel, authoritarian god; Luvah, love, passion and emotive faculties; a Christ-like figure, also known as Orc in his most amorous and rebellious form; and most important, Urthona, also known as Los, inspiration and the imagination. The pantheon also includes feminine emanations that have separated from the integrated being, as Eve separated from Adam: the maternal Enion, an emanation from Tharmas; the celestial Ahania, an emanation from Urizen; the seductive Vala, an emanation from Luvah; and the lovely, musical Enitharmon, an emanation from Los.
Rory Emerald is NOT one of the Four Zoas. Rather he is a tomten sneaking around their habitat, twisting old Urizen's beard in his sleep, peeking under Enitharmon's petticoats, taking sips of Luvah's rarest wine, kneeling in admiration before a nude painting of Ahania, writing graffiti in the notebooks of Los. He has been known to run wild in the woods, shouting, "I'd rather be a tomten in the house of my Zoas than King George of the wild frontier." (Nobody knows which King George he was referring to, of course.)
Where did Rory C. Emerald come from (C for Calhoun, his secret middle name)? Nobody knows--or will admit to knowing. But I, yes I, have found out. For I'm a mind-reader you see, and I have read the "mind" of the elusive one, the illusive one. Rory is the illegitimate son of Rudolf the Red-Nose Reindeer and the Grinch. Yep, I hate to be the one to tell you, but Rudi was a reindoe, unfaithful to her paramour Blitzen (hence, that extra set of horns he grew and tried to hide). Without going into the garish details, let's just say that the offspring of her union with the Grinch were twins, Rory C. Emerald and Ruby R. Godiva. After more than a decade of aimless wandering, Rory has found his home at last, in the habitat of the Four Zoas. Though he has been known occasionally to show up in some of his old hangouts.
Now the question for you is...who the hellfire is Ruby Godiva and for which one of the Precious Moments did she serve as the model? Will her identity be finally revealed in the 26th volume of Lemony Snickets' Series of Unfortunate Events, to be entitled the Quintessential Question? Could it be that Ruby R. herself (the R stands for Rosebud) is actually Lemony Snickets?
