Someone I consider a cool person asked this questions and got rudeness as a response...so time to ask again..as I am also medically incontinent, I'll ask this time..and hopefully it will benefit all of us who have this type of problem...The question is where to find patterns so that you can make adult cloth diapers...any added info pertinent to this topic would be appreaciated.

I've asked this question a number of times and have never gotten an answer from anyone who had anything nice to say.

I finally made my own.

I too am incontinent and wear diapers 24 / 7 due to a medical condition. I searched the web literally for days and could not find a pattern for either diapers or plastic pants.

I even emailed one of the baby diaper makers and did get a very pleasant and understanding response. She stated that she had tried to make them before but that they were too much trouble and she gave it up. I guess it has to do with the size of them.

The only problem with buying ready made diapers is the cost, they are so expensive to purchase and disposables have a long term expense that makes the impracticle not to mention that they are uncomfortable as all get out.

What I finally did was I took a disposable that fit well and layed it out, cut the elastic so it would lay flat. I made a pattern from it out of some card stock (manilla folders) that I could reuse.

I bought the material I needed and cut two pieces to match my pattern (make the wings 6" or more longer than the disposable).

Then I cut 6 pieces the length of the diaper and the width of the crotch as soakers. Take the 6 pieces and sew them together around the edges and once down the middle.

Lay this soaker on the wrong side of one of the panels and stitch it to the panel. Sew the two panels together wrong side out all but one end. When finished turn everything inside out and sew the open end closed. Put elastic at the legs and waist if you want to give a better fit.

I used velcro on the wings to hold the diaper closed when I wear it. No pins required unless you want that extra security.

I used the same pattern for the plastic pants except the wings are shorter than the disposable because you don't need any overlap.

Sew the ends of the wings together wrong side out using a straight stitch the fold the edge over and flat stitch the seam again with a zig-zag stitch.

Cut some 1/2 inch elastic to length that will be comfortable around your waist and legs. Two pieces for each leg and two for the waist. Sew two pieces together the length of the elastic to form a place to put the plastic between the two pieces of elastic. Sew the ends together. Put the plastic between the two pieces of elastic, stretch the elastic and sew through all three layers. Do this for both legs and waist.

I've made several pair of pants and half a dozen diapers. Try each one before making another in order to adjust fit. Each one you make gets better than the one before.

Good luck.

I would say how about purchasing one and then copying it. I was a baby sitter and they are just a rectangle, but then again they might be cheaper to purchase because they are just cloth anyway. I have never heard of them making them in adult size, so how about trying to find out what fabric the baby ones are made of and then working the scale size up. Then you have to realize that babies wear plasic pants or the like over them so you need something. You might want to look into something like that. See what that stuff is made of. Also look on baby sites and see how to wash this stuff or consider a diaper service. There is specialty service for everything. A pattern will not be the hard part because it is just a simple rectange per my memory. I have taken care of tons of babies who people chose to use fabric and I myself was grown on fabric. You have to hold the diaper when you have a poop in it and give it a flush. The poop goes down but not the diaper. This is my old memory.

All it will be is a rectange fitted for the size of your body. look at the baby sites and see how they make them. Now remember a baby is different than an adult. A baby is full of flab. A person if more like a think doll. A baby is amorphic and curled up and kind of alien looking. Do not get me wrong they are really cute. I was the skinny baby and did not look like the alien and looked like a little person, so diapers fit me and they should fit a real person. How about making your own patter and then fitting it to your size and then making a prototype out of diapers. You may even have to make it out of baby diapers if you cannot find that type of fabric. You may have to sew diapers together. It would be better if you can find the diaper and find your size. A pattern could be made out of anything like a piece of news paper or a paper bag or a trash bag. Just remeber you need safety pins they baby kind. You also need some sort of plastic paints for leaks they have come a long way.

Before you re invent the wheel search the web long and hard and see if there is something out there because they say if you have thought of it someone else probably has too.

If not you may have an invention on your hands.

You are correct that cloth is more comfortable than the other stuff. Cleaning could be a nightmare depending on what is invovlved just do tons of reading. There are diaper services that might be a help. There are improved solutions to plastic pants things with velcro. I took care of a kid who had them and some coated stuff on plastic pants so as not to irritate the skin. Who knows. Now in the day with the breathable rain coats who knows what is possible in the way of comfort.

This is your invention if is has not been made take it and run......................... You say you are cool go for it. Help the adults and the babies too.

*********Well I hope you two can share you info at least with eachother and other people who have these problems.***********

Try looking on some of the spina bifita sites and people who have brain injuries. They have a great deal of issues with contence. Also people with spinal cord injury. Perhaps people can share.

I just hope that people keep comunicating and I am sorry I thought fo a moment that this was a school project or something and I am sorry people bash on here. We all have our issues. All of us. I am a woman. Women have issues themselves.

I dont think you will find a pattern anywhere because almost everyone opts for the disposable ones. The only thing I might recommend is taking measurements and using a disposable adult diaper as you "pattern", and maybe use velcro as the fastener. The bigger problem I think you will find is what is the best material to use for this.

Why don't you buy SUMO outfits? You could also just wear a sheet neatly draped around your nether regions--it's not like it's going to matter if they are fashionable anyway, you are wearing a diaper after all. And, I think this is why they make disposable diapers? Depends? Why not just buy them from the store like everybody else, or do you like having your caretakers wash the poop and pee out of your soiled garments? Uggg.
