Because in their experience, if it looks like a duck and quacks, it's a duck. Like, if in their experience, if every xyz person they ever knew did xyz behavior, then it would be natural for them to expect a new xyz person to act the same way.

That depends on one's attitudes, thoughts etc.. But most of the people, including my self, have this habit but it's completely wrong.. I judged too many people to be bad but it turned out that they are among the best and vise versa... Most of the people have a habit of judging people from the outlook which is completely wrong... You need to get to know the person better and you might be able to tell what kinda person s/he is but still you cannot judge a person because you'll never know when and how people change so quickly.. I have a friend whom i've known for more than 10 years...We were really close and like alter egos.. I judged him to have a pretty strong personality and a good heart with a good sense of humour.. even though he was a bit weird.. Suddenly he stopped all the contacts with my other two best friends without a reason and he calls me up occationally just for the sake of giving me the idea that he's right but others are wrong... No one knows why he did that and now we think that he has one of the weakest personalities and a worst character.... We were too quick (even after 10 years) to judge him to be one of the best guys ever...

Interestingly, this is likely to be an evolutionary survival mechanism. If you can build alliances fast and root out your enemies even faster, you may have a chance to survive and pass on your genes before you get stabbed in the back, so to speak.
On a mental level, it may also give us some form of closure knowing the people that we have met.

Usually people judge others to see how they stack up next to them themselves! If they put that person down then they think they are much better themselves.Which is very untrue! Judge not!

It is a trait that evolved because it increased one's chances of survival.

In the jungle, you have to be able to tell friend from foe instantly, or die.

The trait is still useful today. Who has the time to do a background check on every person they must trust: sales persons, doctors, lawyers, etc.

depends on the situation.....some situations call for a quick judgement, like if someone looks like they're about to do something violent......while others call for long term judgement.
