Because our parents, grandparents, and tv shows have them. And some of them are true.

Blacks, homosexuals, foriegners - all are minorities. It is easier to group them as one because there size is relatively small. And preconception is based on some reality. You can easily find people with called "preconceived" behavior.

Preconception has always been there because amount of imformation one has or gets. When I went to Houston, Texas, I was surprised to see no one in cowboy dress. Preconception will always exist, till the time everyone gets well-informed.

Because it is human nature to dislike what is different from ourselves. This is a simple concept. But it is not only the categories you mention. There is prejudice against all races. I'm a white man in the southern US. I certainly deal with my fair share of being discriminated against.

people are still clinging to old beliefs and traditions, i guess... not that it's bad or anything; after all, who are we to say that one's belief is wrong?... it takes time to accept and be part of change... some people just find it hard to do that, so these preconceptions still exist

You left out some others - lawyers, bankers, used car salesmen, people
with big ears, Pizza delivery drivers, male models, blondes with big
boobs, guys with small feet, card dealers, rabbit hunters, old men who
still collect teddy bears and dancing goats. As to why? I don't know.

Stereotypes exist because there's some truth in them. They're only dangerous when we don't recognize them as generalizations, or use them as a lazy means of pre-judging people.

It is learned through the society you grow up in. In addition, we fear those who are different from us and what we do not understand. In coming to understand each other, perhaps one day we can overcome racism and bigotry.
