What is the purpose of the Check Light...?
is it there to alert you when ever there is a problem with the electrical components in the engine (VTEC) / Oxygen sensor ETC..?

Yes, to all of the above. Unless someone took the bulb out.

It never seems to be there is some *** that does not know what thy are talking about. The other 2 answers shows this.
Now here is information you can use.
If the check engine light is on or has come on it means that the cars computer has found something wrong. It is not going to leave you on the side of the road, but it does mean that the normal function of the sensers has found something that is not right and it is letting you know.
As the other person did say the right thing is take it to Auto-Zone and have them scan the cars computer. Thy will tell you what thy have found, but you will have to have it repaired yourself.
The one important thing here is after you correct the fault, have the cars computer reset.
If you dont just replacing the old part will not turn off the light, so be shure it is done

I assume you mean the Check Engine Light. It can mean cylinder misfire, electrical problems, detonation, loose gas cap, you name it. Take it to Auto Zone and have them run a diagnostic. That will tell you what's wrong.

It pretty much means all the above you should go and get a dynastic exam or you might have an electric error

Gold wing is correct. To reset computer, take battery cables off battery for at least 10 minutes.
