Many animals eat poop on a regular basis. These include rabbits, rodents, gorillas, many insects such as dung beetles and flies, and yes, dogs. (Keep that in mind the next time a dog wants to lick you!) Herbivores such as rabbits and rodents eat their own poop because their diet of plants is hard to digest efficiently, and they have to make two passes at it to get everything out of the meal. This is equivalent to a cow chewing its cud, only cows are able to re-eat their food without having to poop it out first. Another reason why animals eat poop is that poop contains vitamins produced by their intestinal bacteria. The animal is unable to absorb the vitamins through the intestinal wall, but can get at them by eating the poop. Another reason that animals such as dogs and flies eat poop is that poop contains a certain amount of protein. Dogs are particularly fond of cat poop because cat poop is high in protein. I had a friend with a dog and a cat, and he never had to clean the kitty litter. The dog took care of it.

I knew this, what I still wonder is the reason as of why cropophagy takes place in dogs since fecal matter is a waste product... Do you think this is due to an extension of their carnivore behavior? Wild animals (carnivores) consume it all, including the poop in the intestines. Then in the cases of dogs is it because of stress? Digestive deficiencies? Physiological and/or behavioral factors? I want to know!!!!!!

It's called coprophagia, and animals do it because there is usually something lacking in their diet, and will eat their poop to try to correct the imbalance. Also, some animals eat the poop of their young as a means to protect their young against predators, until such time that the young is able to protect itself. Yes, to us it's a disgusting habit, but to animals, it's natural.

my 2 yr old dashund/beagle goes for other animal poop. she takes her daily vitamin and her monthly worming pill, however, when she starts eating other animal poop, I know she has consumed a parasite. she will also eat ""other poop" when her anal glands are full. took her to the vet the other day and sure enough there is a parasite in her own poop and the glands were full again. had to double up the worm pill and she was expressed by the vet. today she is full of pep and seems like herself again. bottom line, watch how your pet communicates with you, she/he will let you know by their behavior. another suggestion-get pet insurance- it pays for itself

Why did you ask a question and answer it also?
BTW, My dog loves to eat my cat's poop, cat litter and all. He sits and waits for the cat to do it's job and then runs straight for it. Ugghhh, the nasty little critter.
