Tell the company that they never explained that part of the contract and that they should take them off. Be polite and strong. They will remove them.

About all you can do is change your carrier. This is a problem now under study by the European Union because the high roaming charges diminish the economic integration of Europe.

I have bought a pay-as-you-go for Switzerland because roaming charges were as high as £1.

Once you know, you can get people to send you SMS texts, or you can use your cell phone as a pager, keeping your calls to a few seconds. But I'm surprised that Canada has high roaming charges, and I wonder what people do when they're in places like Derby Line VT where the border goes down the main street and right through the reading room of the public library. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haskell_Free_Library_and_Opera_House

Depends on who your provider is...
But, if you made calls from Canada while you were there yeah they are going to charge roaming fees... it sucks yeah..
If your phone plan says no roaming here and here...etc. Then I suggest you call customer service and figure what in the world is going on...
Good luck. ^_^

Unfortunately - you will have to pay them. Make sure to read any and all type of agreement documents before signing up for cell phones or credit cards.. and on many phones when you are roaming the phone face will say "roam" or "roaming" on it.

The same thing happened to me when I went to Canada. The huge bill sucks, but I learned my lesson!

You can call them and claim that you were NEVER told about these fees. It may work to get them to subtract the charges
