I know there are the major companies in Bratislava but I wonder if it is possible to hire a vehicle in the Tatras area without too much problem. Is it really as expensive as it looks?

You can rent a car In Bratislava, Poprad, Kosice and other bigger towns. It's not so expensive and you can do it also using internet.
For your purpose it's better to rent it in Poprad, because it's in Tatras.

I have had no personal experience of car hire in that area, but I fond the web site below that suggests flying to Krakow in Poland for easier access to the Tatras mountains. Maybe you could pick up a car in Krakow? You would have to check on whether or not they allow you to take the car into Slovakia. Enjoy your trip

Try calling Hertz Central Reservations who are based in Dublin but deal with car hire worldwide. They can advise you on the best deal and availability.

Probably I think on their roads you'd be better off hiring a horse and cart
