My sister has been off birthcontrol for three months and has been sexually active with no other protection. She now has brown discharge in place of her period but has been going on for about 3 weeks. Noit enough to leave in the panties but only when she wipes. Is this a sign of pregnancy? She has a temp of 99.4 but is normally 98.6.

Sometimes, when you go off of the pill, it messes with your cycle. This may be completely normal.

Your current temperature doesn't necessarily tell you what is happening to your body, unless it's compared to temps throughout your cycle. "Temping" is taking your temperature at a specific time of the day (early morning, before getting out of bed), and comparing it to the rest of your cycle, so that you know what hormones are currently prominent. When used this way, an elevated temperature for a long period of time *could* mean that you are pregnant, but it could also just mean that your period is going to come late. The book Taking Charge of Your Fertility is a great resource if you want a more in-depth explanation.

I'd recommend she take a pregnancy test, and if it's negative, just assume the discharge is just a side effect of going off of the pill. I'd also recommend she make an appointment with her doctor if she wants to become pregnant, as s/he could help alleviate any concerns.

Best of Luck!
