Well, if you live in America's worst town, you probably don't have a well-integrated community, or a friendly one. Maybe you don't have a lot of development, or people don't want to build there or open businesses (which is vital to the positive growth of communites). It may need a little spit-shine (a.k.a. it may be a little dumpy). As far as the effects, I'm sure there is more violence and crime. There is probably not as good of an education system (teachers tend to prefer to teach in the best cities, rather than the other way around). The worst town in America will probably make you feel worse every day, while the best town in America will probably make you feel the best.
If you live in the worst town, my advice: move. If that is not feasible, try to better your community. Whether it be volunteering, picking up garbage, etc... You can help make it a better place, if you have the motivation to do so. By helping, you could help to reverse the negative effects of growing up in the "worst" town...

"Yes Minkus!
I believe that the city fathers are embarrassed by ratings. It speaks for the Police Departments, Chamber of Commerce, living conditions in the city and a myriad of other influences. I think Dallas got the worst rating this year. Lots of murders, robbery and assaults.
If I lived there, I wouldn't feel too bad because the ratings wouldn't be my fault; however, I would be cognizant of the fact that the city Council must be stirred to action immediately to reverse the trend."

So I take it you grew up in Hagerstown, Minkus. ;)
Seriously, I would probably examine the methodology of the rankings and determine whether some of the criteria have contributed to any unhappiness on my part. To be sure, things like a depressed economy, poverty and crime would have a lasting effect on anyone in tune to his or her surroundings. And after a while, these people would probably seek greener pastures, thus perpetuating the vicious cycle.

Only those that you perceive. Hard to rate towns from best to worst, everyone's criteria is different. My town sucked so bad McDonald's left.

You learn to live with it OR you move away as soon as you can. Even then, you'll eventually make your way back home before you die, just to see if your town is still "the worst"!

Ratings are ratings, but not necessarily true.
The effects are not good if you think it is actually the worst in america. If you think it's the best thing, then it is.

It is a matter of ATTITUDE. We cannot choose our place of birth, our parents, or the economic and social conditions of our hometown. However, we CAN decide to to refuse to allow the circumstances surrounding our birth, to be a hindrance of any kind whatsoever.

Well, you have to rise above it. Don't have a victim attitude about it. That will only keep you down. It only matter if you believe it's true anyway. If you do, then do something to change it. If you don't, don't worry about it.
