Independence was obtained, finally, in 1783, though the treaty with England formally giving the US independence was not signed by all parties until the next year. July 4th has nothing to do with gaining independence, but with the Declaration of Independence, signed July 4, 1776. The relationship of that document to gaining independence is that the Declaration was a statement of intent to split with England. Our July 4th holiday and celebration are in honor of that document.
