In my religion (I am a witch) we believe we all embody the spark of the diety (the goddess). When we have our rituals the presiding priest and priestess become avatars of the god and goddess. Now If you are talking as in reincarnation, you wouldn't know outright. However you must consider that all gods and goddesses are embodiements of the forces of the natural world and are not physical entities.
