because for some public schools, they have to have a certain amount of hours that the kids need to be in school in order to receive government funding. to accomplish this, they increase the school days.

There are three reasons why it might happen. It sometimes has to do with the state regulations. Another reason has to do with more required topics be covered in the curriculum. Finally, it could be tied in with No Child Left Behind Act with the increased instructional time needed for test preparation.

well in Europe u have to be in school until 2 o'clock smt even 1....but i've read in an article that in america the school system is getting worse and students dont get enough education well at least not in high school..so maybe that's why

I have not heard of this. My children's school days are not longer at all.
