The second law of motion states that Force = mass * acceleration, or in other words, that force is directly proportional to acceleration.
The first law follows because it states that an object at rest or in uniform motion will stay that way unless a force acts upon it. Being at rest or in uniform motion means acceleration is zero. Anything times zero is zero, so no acceleration means no force, and vice-versa.
