Why do we assume that setting up democratic governments are good for American interests? The Palestinians elected Hezbolah. Is Saudi Arabia was a democracy do you think they would elect an American friendly government? Here is a news flash, the Saudi royal family is the only standing in the way between the very anti-American majority there and Bin Laden taking over.

What happens if the Iraqi people elect a Sunni government, ask us to leave and then make an alliance with Iran. Then what? Do we conquer them again?

You're right. I meant Shiite and Hamas.

It's late and I got my radial groups mixed up.

I think you mean Shiite* since Iran is Shiite.

Youre quite right. Look what happened to Palestine, they voted Hamas into power!

Probably what we are banking on most is Arabs coming to the slow conclusion that freedom is good and oppresive theocracies should be a thing of the past. In theory, any nation that truly exalts liberty and rebukes tyrrany should really look up to and allie themselves with the greatest nation on earth that has been doing it for over 200 years!

A Democracy is a good thing if the democracy survives. If the Democracy does not survive and is replaced by a dictatorship then that dictatorship will most likely be a bad thing. Only a democracy can ensure a reasonable amount of fairness for the most people possible. Perfect fairness is not achievable because though all humans want to be dealt with fairly, many do not want to treat others fairly.

Democracy is a good thing because it allows the body politic of democratic nation-states to change its leadership and government without having to resort to destabilizing juntas or revolutions.

Look at it this way: If we get a real bum in office who everyone hates (think someone who's a lot worse than the presidents we've had--someone who severely damages our American way of life), he can be ousted relatively quickly and without violence.

What do you think it would take for Cubans to get rid of Castro?

Since nothing in life is ever 0% or 100%, it all boils down to odds and likelihoods. When it comes to government types, democracy is much more relatively moderate and domestically peaceful.

You are confused just a little. A democracy can hate everyone as far as that goes. It just simply means that it was up for a vote and they picked Hezbollah so that was a public picked government. It was not a forced government. They picked them so that means they are backing them. That is all that matters is that the people get what they want and if it is a dictator then that is what they have the right to have.

That is really not true. The best governments that support American interests historically have been puppet dictatorships. Democracy is just a buzzword that our politicians use when they want to open up new markets. They sell our military actions to the US public to get the opinion going in their favor.

The people on top of our economy are absolutely convinced that Democracy is a good game that they know how to play. They see the world as winners and losers, and many of them feel sorry for the lessor 93 per cent of the people; It never occurs to them to teach the real rules of success to the people who have been shut out of the system.

Let's not go down the stupid assumption path.

Admittedly, we did see the Palestinians elect terrorists so it isn't out of the question.

My POV is that the majority of the middle east does not deserve democracy. The should learn to fight for it themselves or continue to follow the path they deserve.

Democracy is NOT a good thing!! That is why we are not one! We are a Representative Republic! Our founders did not want majority rule as they knew what would happen to those in the minority!
