I just came across a little money, and I need a new guitar. Anything under 600 is duable. I play mainly play Hard Rock, Blues, and I do softer open chord stuff often to. The Epiphone les paul standard has really caught my eye. The other guitarist in the band I am uses one, and I play it sometimes, the thing is amazing. But I am not sure if there was anything else anyone could reccomend. Please do not state that epiphones suck, because they don't. The cheap epihones under $300 do. I plan on going down to guitar center tomorrow and trying a few out.

Here, you can look to see what guitar center has to offer.

You could do a Les Paul. It has a pretty classic rock sound and a lot of alternative/rock bands use them. I would also look into a Fender Stratocaster since you mentioned that you play a little blues as well. A Strat could take you to a more bluesy sound. Hope this helps.

When you go down there see if they have any really nice used guitars. I've picked up some sweet deals on used equipment from them over the years.
Last guitar I had was an Ibanez RG270 that I got for around $150.00 and it was probably the best axe I've owned aside from the Jackson Soloist I had back in the early 90's.
They might have a Gibson Les Paul Studio on sale as well. I remember checking one out a few years ago for around $600. Mind you things have gone up since the oil crisis and such but GC tends to give out some good deals anyway.

Hey, my choice would be a used standard Strat, but if you're a Gibson man, there may be no way to talk you out of it. Please consider used. New, you are just paying for the privledge of dinging it first. It's all in the sound anyway. 600 MAY be able to get you a used base level Les Paul Studio...

Look on ebay too...
By the way Musicians Friend and Guitar Center are owned by the same company...

Mid priced epi's are fine. If you are into harder rock, don't forget to check out some lower priced Jacksons and maybe an Ibanez.
I personally play a Gibson SG for my blues type stuff and an Ibanez AG85 for my jazz. I have a Jackson for the metal. I guess just play around on a few and pick one that fits you and your playing style.
P.S. I used to play an Epi Les Paul and I did enjoy it a lot, I just like the Jackson better.

I have a Takimini 6-string and an Alvarez 12-string acoustic, both of which I've been happy with for years. I don't know that much about the Epiphone. But, hey, Les Paul was a genius. I'd sure give it a shot.

I have had 2 Epiphones. They are better than some guitars in that price range, but I would look at a used Gibson SG before you settle on the Epiphone. In fact, so many guitars are being imported from Mexico, Korea, and other places where the labor is cheap that you may even be able to get a new SG for that price.
Whatever you do, stay away from Ibenez and Peavey guitars.
