Chinese gift stores sometimes carry "ant sticks" . They are non toxic and resemble a stick of chaulk. I use to use these around my cat food dish and when my children were small.
I now use this ant bait. It can be put in areas, cupboards, closets, etc where your pets or children can not get to.
Recipe:
1 part 20 Mule Team Borax or Boric acid
9 parts of a sweet sticky liquid like maple syrup, honey or Karo syrup
Mix the ingredients. Heating in a double boiler may speed the process. Take an empty margarine tub and poke 4 holes around the bottom edge (entry holes for ants to walk in).
Place a dollop the size of a quarter in the middle of the tub, then put the top back on. This mixture is not non-toxic, however it is less toxic, and that's the key to its success.
The ants carry it back to the nest where they feed it to the entire colony and wipe out the nest.

There are some commercial ant traps you can buy in OSH or Home Depot, the poison is in a metal case with a small enough hole for ants, so pets can't chew on them. There are also "organic" sprays that use natural plant oils that work well, and are safe for use around children so they should be okay for pets. I've had good luck using chewing tobacco like Skoal, most pets can't stand the smell of it.
If you can follow the ant trail, you might be able to locate the nest and then bomb that with boiling salt water. Not so good for plants, but definitely wipe out ant nest.

Comet cleaner will kill the ants you see. My boyfriend's roomate found out by accident, a little comet will kill them right away. Otherwise, there's a liquid killer i think called Terro, almost any grocery or hardware store that sells any kind of bug repellant or killer, will sell this. It works wonders. Its best around places you see the ants, like around faucets and sinks, stoves, etc. Also clean up the area, wipe and disinfect, and pick up anything laying out like cat food or bread or any food or open water, and moev it somewhere else where the ants aren't. Ants go to food, if food isn't where it's easily accessable they'll go to the ant bait poison instead. But the Terro and Comet both can be toxic to yoru pets if you let them touch it, so keep them away while cleaning and keep the terro out of reach of kids and animals.

The return of the ANTS signified that the cleaning is not thorough (is there any bits of leftover?) or the cleaning agent is not working (huh?- true). On one side of the coin, it's the natures' way of cleaning up our mess and on the other side, it is a pest. I used this product made from botanical ingredients which also dissinfect as well: Sol-U-Guard. Check it out at this website: www.saferforyourhome.com and ask me for any questions or tips.
Thanks for allowing me to share.

Most stores has a product called Terro a drop or two in their path works best of anything I've found.
I have also heard nutra-sweet does the job. They will carry it back home and it will kill all of them.
Just put a little powder where they can find it.

Any artificial sweetener., like Nutrasweet.
Anything with Aspartame in it.
It was originally developed to get rid of ants before Dick Cheney, then a director of Nutrasweet decided to let humans poison themselves with it.
The ants carry it back to their nest, where they all eat it, and die.
