A good politician has a very active life full of meeting, events, hearings, conferences, and campaigns. I have worked for several of them and the really good ones are out at a community event EVERY NIGHT all year long. The community expects politicians to be visible and accountable, so they have long work hours without much private time. If you want to be a good politician, think about 80-100 hour weeks most of the year. It is really hard on the husbands/wives and kids of the elected officials.
It is a glamorous job to be an elected, you get to give speeches, cut ribbons, be in parades. But the glamour comes at a price, you have to deal with some of the most difficult problems faced by the public. People that have had a bad experience with the government will vent their anger at you. You will get booed, heckled, and cursed, sometimes for reasons beyond your control. (see the previous answer about "all politicians are corrupt" as an example) You will have a great deal of power and your constituents will expect you to use it to help them.
Depending upon where you live, it could be difficult to become an elected official because campaigning is very expensive. It usually takes years of community work to get to the point of actually running for office. Many politicians start by getting appointed to a local board or commission. Also many begin their careers as political staffers. There is no career path to elected office, but these are several of the more common backgrounds of elected officials.
Some elected offices pay well, while others are pretty much volunteer and you would have to work another job to support yourself. As far as I know only the President, Vice President, some state Governors, and a couple big-city mayors get housing provided by the government. However in some cases you can get a per diem to offset the costs of living expenses. For example, almost all Senators and Congressmen/women have to maintain a residence in their district and in Washington DC, so it gets pretty pricey. If you devote your life to politics, you will likely not be rich, but you should be able to live comfortably.
You might want to start by interning with political office or volunteering on a campaign. That will give you some idea of what our world is like.

Who really cares how much they get paid? You have to be rich to start with to even become a politician and win. You have to have huge amounts of money to campaign. Then take into account that the real money comes from lobbyists who are trying to suck your **** all the time. Must be nice, for them, but not for the regular American who is ruled by someone who has no idea what life is really like for the common man.
