OK, so, I have read all the other "brilliant" (I wish you could hear the saracasm dripping from my voice.) ideas about how to erase the addresses from the address bar. Clearing the cookies hasn't worked. Cleaing the history hasn't worked. Clearing the internet files hasn't worked. Disabling autocomplete hasn't worked. I want something that works!!!!! I have an ancient computer that runs on Windows98. I have no idea what version my IE is.

CCleaner... No more questions. Just download.

Note: It clears ALL annoying temporary files from any kinds of applications within it configuration.

If you want to find out what version your IE is, click on help on the top toolbar and then click on About.

As I don't know exactly what you've done, here are some ideas.

Are all addresses kept in the address bar or is it a particular site that's kept there? If it's a particular site, maybe you have a spyware/worm problem. Also, if the below doesn't work or you've already tried it, you might go to the micosoft web site and search their knowledge database.

If I were you I'd physically go to the file where the cookies and the internet files are kept and try manually deleting them. Using the tool in IE doesn't always work if you have an older version of IE. Go to TOOLS, then OPTIONS, then click SETTINGS under Temporary Internet Files, then click the Folder.

It will open the folder where the cookies and files are. Also, set your "days to keep in history" to 0.

As a last resort, you could try to upgrade your edition of IE to the latest one.

Windows 98, wow, I haven't used that in quite a while. If you have tried all that you have stated you could try a file shredding application such as StompSoft's Digital File Shredder Pro. This software will allow you to permanently delete all of you histories. Here is the minimum system requirements:

Windows 98SE, ME, 2000, or XP
166Mhz Processor, 64MB RAM
10MB Hard Drive Space
CD-ROM Drive
Supported Browsers
Internet Explorer 5.0+, AOL 8.0+, Netscape 7.2+, Mozilla or Firefox

You should be able to click on "Help" and the click on "About Internet Explorer" while you have an Internet Explorer window open to get information that will tell you what version of explorer you are using.

Another way you may want to try is to go to the folder directly and delete the files from there. Without getting into a lengthly description about how to find the folder, I would recommend that you use the search option. On your desktop click on start then click on search. Once search is open select "all files and folders" and type "history" as your search criteria. This should bring up several folders labeled "History." All that you have to do then is open them up, see what's inside and delete away :)

When you clear history, you have only cleared up to that point. To eliminate history at shutdown, click Tools, Internet Options -- look down a bit to "days to keep pages in history" and set it to 0. History should be clean when you power on and should empty at shutdown.

There will, of course, be a list while you are online unless you clear history periodically while online. I just tried it and this works.

I have a PC with WinXP and am presently working on my old PC with Win98. No problem here. Give it another try.

Have a close look at the icons on the tool bar. Can you see a small black upside down triangle at the side of every icon, well if you click on it a drop down menu will appear with all sorts of things on it.
The one you want is on the left of the search box. look for options and personalize your tool bar.
you can also highlight the search and press delete on your keyboard.

You can also go to tools>>internet options and delete cookies, temp files, and history.

Go to Help and select "About Internet Explorer" and that will tell you what version you are using. Once you know the IE version, go here for instructions in that IE version using 98

I understand your frustration, but it seems that you have followed the procedure to clear the address bar history.
you may want to try a Little software that perhaps may work.
it's name "IE Privacy Keeper"

just copy into your google search box, and from then just download and run it.

try looking on the internet. Like type in brand of computer and you may find a "contact us" area. Then you can ask the company straight out.
