Where I'm at, SE Michigan, this is extremely low...I've seen $5000-7000 for diggin up the yard, making the necessary repairs plus an outside cleanout at grade, then refilling the hole. I'd check to make sure exactly what work this bid includes.
Have you had your sewer line scoped with a camera? Is it conclusive what the problem is? Can it be repaired by re-lining the sewer lead?
As for digging it yourself as others have stated, that may depend on depth of sewer line. If your house is on a basement, you're talking a minimum of 8' depth. Then there is soil type to deal with. Sand needs a 45 degree cut edge to minimize the risk of being buried by a cave-in. Clay is just a pain to dig.
If you do have designs on digging yourself, make sure to go to your municipality and check out the sewer tap depth of your specific property. They have these plans from when your area was developed. Please dig safely if you do. Cave-ins are nothing to trifle with.

iyou should do the digging youself or find one of the local kids willing to make a few bucks to do the digging for you...most plumbers do not like to get too dirty.sewage pipe is really cheap and you may be able to make the repair yourself...you local hardware man can usually be a great help with information on the steps that are required...if the break is inside the basement or crawlspace this seems to be a bit on the high sidei would also check with some of the local handymen ,you could save yoursef quite a bit of money this way...

Not a bad price. I had to run about 50 ft. of new sewer pipe 3 years ago, it cost me 4k. But they had to dig up the back yard, and it was down about 15 feet, so I think it is a fair price..
