I bought one of those 4x8 trailer kits from northerntool. The build and wiring went well. I tested the wiring of the trailer when it was just the frame and no wooden sides. Everything worked and was fine. A few days later after I added the wooden sides and floor, the lights on the trailer were not right. If you turn on one of the blinkers, all the lights on the trailer flash as if the hazard lights were on. Also, when you have the tow vehicle lights on, all the brake lights come on the trailer, but when you step on the brakes, all the trailer lights go off. It did rain yesterday before the floor was installed so the wires may have gotten a little wet. I am going to take apart the connections and clean the wires with sandpaper and tinners fluid. Does any have any other suggestions or heard of anything like this?

Keep in mind, the trailer lights were working perfectly just 2 days ago. It did rain since and I have added wooden sides since it was last working correctly. The only time the trailer lights do work correctly on this trailer is when the tow vehicle lights are off.

Trailer Wiring Troubleshooting

The problem is probably not the trailer ... it is the tow vehicle... or rather the incompatibility of the two wiring systems. Many vehicles have separate brake light/ turn signal circuits ....most trailers combine these two circuits into one. This can cause the symptoms you are describing. Go to your local NAPA Auto Parts Store and get a turn signal converter (Balkamp part number 755-1086). It should cost less than $20.00. It will only take a few minutes to wire it in and it will solve your problem.

It sounds to me like you might have yanked a wire out when you put the side boards on and now its causing a direct short. (When a hot wire is touching ground) Its a small enough trailer so you shouldn't have to look to far to find the problem.

Truth is, I've been a carpenter for almost 36 years, and I haven't found anything like this for less than 10's of thousands of dollars. Here's the bottom line: If you are planning to start on your woodworking project, this isn't something you should use, it's something that you would be insane not to.

Along with stone, mud and animal parts, wood was one of the first materials worked by early humans. Microwear analysis of the Mousterian stone tools used by the Neanderthals show that many were used to work wood. The development of civilization was closely tied to the development of increasingly greater degrees of skill in working these materials.
