how to compose songs on the computer? (in MIDI format)

You will need a MIDI keyboard, a MIDI cable, and a sound card with a MIDI port like a Creative Labs Sound Blaster Audigy 2.

Yes, it is possible using a "virtual keyboard" in software, but very cumbersome as you will be typing in simulated keys on your PC keyboard which won't quite have the feel of a real keyboard if you're used to it.

You will then need some sort of sequencing software to edit and record your music. Some sound cards come bundled with it but if not, then get Cakewalk.

You can get Finale 2006 or Sibelius, both are good for composing songs in midi, you don't need a keyboard, but a keyboard is also good.

I've used finale, which is a great free program you can download online.
