The people at Writer's Market have another book, called the Guide to Literary Agents. This is an excellent way to find listings of respectable agents that are suited to your genre of writing.

Another excellent reference is the website Preditors and Editors. It can help you avoid scams in all areas-- agents, publishers, contests, etc:

Go to the search feature on Yahoo or Google and research self publishing because you don't really want to deal with a literary agent until you get up in ranks with Stephen King and Danielle Steel where you cater to a broader audience. Self Publishing protects beginner writers from getting cheated out of their money and has full creative control over their own material and decides what goes in and what comes out. When you deal with a high end literary agent and publishing firm you're bound to all kinds of contractual obligations and other things that would make you obligated or else be sued for breach of contract. Self publishing is the way to maintain control over your own material so you're not allowing some firm to take what is rightfully yours away.

Prove you are sincere with what you have written, that you are an experienced, qualified writer
and have the talent to make money for the agent and yourself.
