Some black folks don't call each other that. Oprah Winfrey has said that this word should be eliminated from the vocabulary of every black person. It was a word that was invented by a white person, that came to be used to utterly belittle and "animalize" the black people, who were slaves at the time. It was a word that had inherent hatred that many whites had for blacks. Could slaves have effectively rejected such a label? I think not- they had no power to. Unfortunately, it is a word that has survived the generations since slavery, for several reasons. Hatred by white supremecist groups was one reason. National stereotypes and prejudice was another reason. Amongst black people themselves, this word has remained, and is often used either affectionately or derogatorily. When used affectionately, it is used amongst close friends most often. Believe it or not, I have heard a white person use this word with *very* close black friends, and get away with it, because they are so close. However, that white person can also expect to be called the same word by his friends. (Generally, though, this is a 'don't try this at home' kind of thing). The word still has its racist origins, and I agree with Oprah- not only should white people not say it (unless they are racists), but black leaders should make a concerted effort to eliminate this word from the mouths of black youth everywhere. It will take lots of effort. That's why black people can't stand white people calling them that.

Being raised in a predominant black neighborhood my definition of the "N" word was a lazy SOB whether they were black, white, red, yellow, brown, purple or what ever. I seldom or ever used the word. Today I still go by my definition of the word but only as a personal opinion and rarely ever use it.

The only word I disagree with is black. I was brought up using colored or nigro which I thought was appropriate. Why they call themselves Afro-Americans is the puzzling point for me. They were born in America the same as me and are from African heritage and myself from German heritage. I'm an American and not a German American. My personal preferences are God and Country. I love my God first and my Country second and could care less about my heritage. But why not just go along with "to each his own" ..plus "do unto others as you would like them to do unto you" ... or "Love thy Neighbor" and quit the squabling.

Some do; some don't. Various reasons - ignorance; economic class; environment; a familiarity and form of slang used with one another; internalized racism. It runs the gamut. When whites use the term it has traditionally, over the years been meant to express derision, disdain, condescension, hatred and it harkens back to days when whites had slaves. For a white person to call a black person a ni**er puts a whole different connotation on the term for the black person hearing it.

First of all, black people have been hearing that word from white people for a long time. Obviously, they got used to it. However, this word is like a greeting from one black to another. White people have used this term to insult and bring shame to the black community. So, of course, black people today refuse to hear white people say *****a. It's not your place and you shouldn't step out of your boundaries. But, some white people just can't seem to get over this word!

That question is probably one of the oldest chicken or the egg questions. It doesn't deserve an answer. You my dear are a raging racist and you know it. You want to be permitted to use it and not be put on the hot seat. No I take that back you want to say it in public and not get your a s s whooped. You already use it in private and probably everyday. The thing with racist they ask the same questions because they are to stupid to figure out any new ones. Don't feel caught most other white folks think just like you in case you think you thought you had a raging brain storm you didn't. You are just as stupid as they are. LOL

They can't stand "white people" (as you said) saying that because it is offensive. Why the call each other that I do not know. What I do know is I'm neither black nore white...so I try to stay out of that conflict.

No self-respecting black person uses that word. No educated, intelligent black person uses that word, either. Professors, doctors, teachers, etc. despise the word.

It's only in the rap songs and on the streets that the word is used to address each other.

It is originally a white term to denigrate black people. It was a hateful term implying and meaning that they were inferior beings.
Wrong, and it's a joke now.

But, don't you do it ever if you're not black.
