The best bet is to burn any files you want to keep onto a CD. Then, run the CD that came with your computer and do a factory restore (making sure you format the hard drive).

Once that's done, startup the computer and skip the registration if you can. If it won't let you, then just put in a real generic name like Dell Customer or Gateway Customer (you get the drift), and the address for the place where you bought it. You really only need to do this if you want to make sure there is no other drives or partitions that still contain your data. If you only have one drive partition you can skip this extra step, unless you want to do it just for grins.

Other users of Yahoo Ask speak of programs on the market that claim to result in a clean hard drive. I did not even look into them. With my credit card and SS numbers on disk someplace, when I give away or sell my PC, I intend to remove and literally destroy the hard drive. A new one doesn't cost that much.

If I were to buy someone's old PC I wouldn't conceive of using their hard drive and would insist on a new one.

Two Words: Floppy Disc
You can save all your pics and documents onto it.

If you can't, go to a computer store, and ask them to put all your info on a CD. It costs about $5

Good Luck!!!

Hammer to the hard drive is fool proof. Some people say magnets work well, but whats the fun in that!

Do a factory restore, that takes it back to the way it was when you first bought it.
