I've got an '86 El Camino w/ an '87 350 w/ a four barrell carb(holley), and the other night i got sideways in a parking lot and then got sideways going onto the road...and now the engine runs like it's only on 6 cylinders...it's really rough. i was wondering if maybe i screwed up the timing? like when i got up into high RPM's...maybe the timing was advanced and then never brought back to normal by the rotor? what do you think happened?

it's not just the sound of the engine...the car jumps when you're driving it...like it's only getting spurts of fuel at a time or something...

no way in hell you made the timeing chane jump a touth in all the years i have raced and ran demos i have never seen this and never seen a dist jump a touth check the spark plugs first if not check the wires if this fixes it you have to much advance back it off a little if the vacume advance sticks it still is not enough well should not be enough to burn out plugs my race car is locked at 45 deg total advance from the time you start it untill 6500 its at 45 deg and i have never had that prob you may need to pull the dist and move it back a tooth in the retarded deriction as it may have been put in wrong in the first place, try pulling the vacume line from the vac adv and plug it run the engine and see if its any better this will also tell you that the adv is to high, one thing i have seen is the module go in the dist but the engine still run but the engine never gave good spark and tricked me in to thinking it was way out of time so i checked the timing it was good i checked every thing so i just changed the dist and droped in a new one in the dident move anything and pow there she was ready to pull the gates off hell and scrap with devil good luck
hope you find the prob
p.s. valve springs that are broken make a **** load of noise broken rockers same thing noise and if your valve springs broke after only hoppen on er two times that pretty bad but i cant see that i have seen stock springs go through hell and back on a big solid lifter cam and i mean HELL and the engine still runs GOOD

I wish i could say it was your timing, and maybe a plugwire did pull off or melt. But over reving it will ,in my opinion, bend some valves, especially if you have a big cam. You can try unplugging the 12v from the distributor and crank the engine. You'll here the popping out of the carb or the exhaust depending if it is an int. or ex. valve. . since there is no spark, you know if it still sounds like crap, its not the timing

Sounds like too much rev. probably broke valve springs or possibly "floated" the valves and bent them. Broken springs generally don't make noise, must pull covers and visually inspect. In any event, start with compression check 2 know where 2 start. Could also be possible pulled plug wires under torque, particularly if they are loomed or fastened to the body and the engine is not chained.

Go check you're timing chain it probley was worn out and loose. Then when you raced you're car/truck it slipped. If its the timing chain dont just buy the chain when you go to replace it. Ive done that and it does not last to long so buy the 3 piece set. Gears and the chain

You may have messed up the timing possibly something else. I try to keep my rpms down because it's just not worth the hassle.

I'd bet that you over-revved it and jumped your cam timing. Pull the timing chain cover and check it out.
