Does Taiwan belong to mainland China, or is Taiwan independent?

From 1947-49, the Chinese Nationalists, under Generalissmo Chiang Ki Shek fought in the China Civil War against the Chinese Communists, led by Mao Zedong. When the Nationalists lost in 1949, they fled the mainland and settled on Formosa Island (now Taiwan).

The Nationalists established their own government, and Chiang ruled Taiwan until his death in 1975.

Taiwan is an independent nation. It was formed when the communists took over China and forced the pre-Communist government to flee the country. They fled to Taiwan and set up a Chinese Government-in-exile. They still, 50 years later, consider themselves the legitimate government of China (the official name of the country is Taiwan Republic of China). Taiwan held China's seat on the UN Security Council until 1971. There are still only a handful of countries that recognize the communist government as the real one.
