the housing in and around NYU is very expensive. If you are rich this won't matter but if you want some bang for your buck, try the lower east side. this is a working class neighborhood. You want to be on Manhattan. A lot of people live in New York but many of them do not live on Manhattan. Living on Manhattan is the easiest way. People who don't live there will never understand. They all have to travel to Manhattan by train, bus or car but if you already live there it will be so much more convenient.

Consider Brooklyn, like Park Slope or Brooklyn Heights.
