In 1817, David Ricardo pubished his Principles of Political Economy and Taxation, arguably the second (chronologically) great work in Economics. What Karl Marx did was take Ricardo's work and followed it to its logical conclusion - capitalism cannot survive. The space here is too limited to explain why. For some 40 years economists and philosophers tried to find fault with Marx's logic. They failed. It wasn't until the 1890s that Leon Walras and Alfred Marshall came to the realization that it was not Marx that was wrong, but Ricardo instead. Marx's argument was "if we take Ricardo as correct, capitalism must fail". Infallible argument, faulty premise.

The hype about Marx is that there are people out there that, despite the evidence to the contrary, won't admit that he was wrong. These people won't admit that communism just goes against human nature. They dismiss its failure by saying that it just has not been given an adequate chance or that it just wasn't implemented in the right way or by the right people. So, there are still a lot of people who are trying in their own way to implement this failed system. In many cases they are trying to force it on people by force. In other cases, they are trying to implement it more gradually and surreptitiously so that people don't realize what they are doing.

His ideas fail is the understatement of the year. 100 million dead over the last century in an attempt to implement his ideas. That's failure on a horrific scale.
He is still popular because of the promise of communism to solve all our social problems. Never mind it doesn't.

Basically, it can be summed up as people are stupid. They can go with what makes more sense to themsleves rather than what works best. Communism just keeps on failing and failing but they never learn.

He wasn't mjuch of a writer, but he tried. I live in the USA, and I went to a bookstore and bought a copy of "The Communist Manifesto. " Hell, I was just buying a book to read. The girl who rang up my purchase asked me if I wanted a bag and I said no thanks. I planned on just shoving the paperback in my back pocket. She got an alarmed look on her face. Apparently she thought I should hide it.

His writings had a huge impact on the history of the 20th century whether they worked or not, well implemented or not.
