Rap does not suck. Most mainstream rap is sub-par. There is garbage music in any genre, from country, to rock, to pop, to classical. As with anything you have to have an inclination towards any style of music for it to be enjoyable to you. Yes it is true any body can rap but to do it well is truly artistic. For people who say anybody can rap, yeah well any body can write poetry also it just takes a pen and paper. We still read the works of Edgar Allen Poe, Geoffrey Chaucer, and T. S. Eliot today because they had a message that rings true today. Many rappers also have a message that resonates today. Try out acts such as Aesop Rocks, Common, Atmosphere, Jay-Z (to an extent), Tupac, and others who are not just rapping about themselves but issues important to them. Rap songs may not be as catchy as the other styles of music but many times it is of a much heavier subject matter, and if anybody can rap sing along with an entire song not just the hook. It is all about the placement, use, and creative rhyme schemes that can make rap as fascinating, or more so in my opinion, as any other form of musical expression. It is creative artistic expression.
Sadly, so many times people let their assumptions and bias form their decisions and that seems to be the case with rap music, so many non-listeners see it only as criminals and drug dealers talking about guns, money, and misogyny. Rap can be so much more, widen your narrow world view and you will be a much richer person for the effort.

I think a lot the new rap is garbage. Most new tracks have no message, no rhyme or reason, and unrelatable to anyone but the rapper. Who care's about your pimp cup, spinner wheels, and gold teeth. It was all about the good ole days of rap...tracks like Gorillas in the Mist, Fight the Power, and Respect Yourself that gave you a reason to stand up for your rights, want to get out of the gutter, and chase some dreams. And please...lets not confuse mainstream rap with real hip-hop. There's a difference...hip-hop has 4 elements (MCing, Breaking, Graff, and Turntablism)....todays mainstream rap has only one element (Money Made off of the Wannabe Band Wagon Crowd).

Rap sucks because it isn't music.
You can say it's an art form all you like, but something that requires little to no talent to make/perform can not be considered music.
And yes, I've even heard rap artists not on MTV/Vh1. "Underground" rap artists, if you will. It's no different.

Any one can rap, all you do is talk fast to a repetitive beat. Rappers have no singing, or instrumental talent. It's shallow and all about the same thing.

If someone gave you a five-pound, 320-piece box of chocolates, and the first six tasted like poop, would you eat all five pounds to form an opinion?
Most people aren't going to keep trying. You are welcome to. Mozart wrote 30+ symphonies. How many have you listed to?

If you don't like the genre then it's quite likely that you aren't going to go out of your way to hear more of it.
I hate country music and there is no way in hell I am going to envelop myself in it with the slim likelihood that I would find something I liked.
