In 1979, a young Duane Chapman is released from jail after doing 18 months on a murder charge (a case of guilty by association). Brought before another judge for refusal to pay child support, the biker and one time prison barber was desperate for a way to make money. The court offered him $200 to find a bond jumper and the rest, as they say, is history. http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/read.php?ID=14251
In 1977, Chapman was sentenced to five years of hard labor on murder charges, he served just 18 months before being paroled in 1979. Before his sentencing, Chapman had married, and fathered at least one child. His wife Lafonda filed for divorce while he was in prison on the murder charges. Because Chapman owed money for child support, the judge in charge of handling the child support case asked Chapman to catch a fugitive for $200, thus a bounty-hunter was born.

he did not murder someone. he was there when someone was murdered. he did time for it because he was there. and if ya would watch the show ya would have known that because he has explained it before
"He's also the king of comebacks -- a modern-day hero who was once a zero after serving time in a Texas prison for first-degree murder. It's a conviction he claims was unfounded and later candidly discusses, for the first time ever, with MidWeek.
"I am what rehabilitation stands for," claims the man who's been profiled on such TV shows as The Learning Channel's Secret World of Bounty Hunters and Court TV's Anatomy of a Crime, and whose Predator's Predator column at www.crime.com receives a bevy of hits on a daily basis. "I did time in prison, and that made my mother and father -- not to mention the public -- very ashamed of me."
And so as part of his penance, he vowed to help make America a safer place for all.
"It's why I hunt men -- fugitives of the law," says Dog, who also spends a good portion of his time tracking bail jumpers, or skips, between Hawaii and Colorado -- where he owns three additional bonding companies. "This is a game of good guy versus bad guy. And I must capture the bad guy!"
According to Chapman another gang member, Donny Kirkandall, murdered a pimp and drug dealer named Jerry Lee Oliver, a crime for which Chapman was found in complicity by a Texas judge. Chapman has reportedly been arrested at least 20 times"

He knew about the murder and was not forth coming to the police. In Texas, accessory after the fact is the same as murder!
Keep your nose clean in Texas! I hear they have a law called "He needed killing" and that's as good of an excuse as self defense is anywhere else!

He was arrested for murder because he was the captain of the bike club who did it, (the leader, the one in charge) he was arrested for skipping bail, because he chose to break the Mexican law. His ego over rides his concern for the law. It's sad that people over look this part of the picture. and idolize him as a good guy. He is no better then the ones he turns in. (don't do as i do,do as i say do) ME BIG MAN!

Yes, I think that you are referring to the incident in the past that sent him to prison and reformed him. Apparently, he was sergeant-at-arms of a motorcycle gang back in the day. in 1977, he was convicted of a murder he did not do and served 18 months in prison before being released. It was there that the warden told him to do something with his life. Chapman received a clemency pardon for the crime.
Recently, he was accused of illegal detention and conspiracy in the capture of Andrew Luster, the now convicted serial rapist and Max Factor heir.
Bounty hunting is considered a crime in Mexico, and charges were pending since local police in Mexico arrested them shortly after they roped in Luster. They posted bail but never returned for their court hearing in July 2003.
Dog, Leland and Timothy Chapman are now required to wear electronic monitoring devices until they return to court for extradition hearings to face trial in Mexico. The judge said they were not flight risks.

He wasn't arrested for murder. It was for Illegally Detaining a criminal. Except this criminal is an heir to the Max Factor (or something similar) company. Despite the criminal's 4 or 5 rape charges, and fleeing to Mexico, he's managed to have Dog arrested. Apparently the Mexican police were demanding he release the criminal, but Dog said no way, and brought him back to the states for his punishment.
I read this in an online article. From MSN.com.
