I will be organising the flights myself. Need some advice e.g. on reliable local travel agents in SA who could help me to put a good sightseeing package together, with self-driving, good itinerary, comfortable, but not too expensive hotels. I want to avoid unnecessary middle-men and would like to explore the country rather than just spend time lying on a beach or being hearded with a group of 20 or so shop-craving strangers on package holidays...:-)

Thompson tours is a very good reliable travel agency (www.thompsons.co.za), they should be able to help you.

But you don't need a travel agent, it is easy to organize the trip your self (if you have a bit of time). It is really easy to rent a car from AVIS for instance (can be done on-line) or the international www.argusrentals.com, (which I found to be cheaper and more mileage than AVIS) and book your own hotels/ B&Bs. For accomodations see for example www.aatravel.co.za, which is accomodation recommended by the AA (automobile association), or www.wheretostay.co.za or www.safarinow.com.

Do you know what you want to see yet?
Kruger National Park is really worth a visit and has great accomodation - I recommend at least three nights. All the national parks in South Africa are great, and scattered throughout the country, so you culd actually plan a two-week holiday sleeping in various national parks (if you are very interested in nature). See www.sanparks.org - here you can also book accomodation in the national parks.

The Garden Route is really beautiful along South Africas east/south coast with lots of special places to stay.

Cape Town is a must, so much to see, I would recommend at least 3 days there.

Feel free to ask me more questions about South Africa (I live here at the moment).

Man, i know you are not looking for this type of answer but i think it will be best if you just contact a travel agency. It is much easier and no tricks are involved.
