HPV strands 16,18, 30, 31, and some in the 50's have a high potential to turn in to cervical cancer.
There is a vaccine out against most of these strains.
The HPV virus is a Latent virus, which means that it is always around once you catch it.
Sometimes people can ( very small percentage people) Clear this spontaneously, or with cryo, or laser therapy.
However, people carry the warts that can spread, and yes people can catch it even when asymptomatic.

As mentioned in an earlier post, HPV is an STD that can lead to cerviacl cancer in some women. A lot of doctors are now recommending that women now be tested for HPV along with their yearly PAP exam. I suffered the consequences of HPV...I had 2 cryo surgeries on my cervix, one LEEP procedure, and finally had to have a total hysterectomy to remove the uterus and ovaries because I had developed stage 4 pre-cancer of the cervix. Don't second guess yourself...if you think there is ANY possibility you may have it, discuss it with your gynecologist or family doctor...and if you already know you have it, keep a close watch of your cervix. It's no fun to have a hystectomy before you're 30...or any time, for that matter. :)
