First of all, don't listen to fotitudinousskeptic's answer, not much truth to it, my daughter has a degree in fashion, and has done some modelling, and she makes about 50K a year, some years she has made a lot more. It doesn;t matter what you do, if you are good at it, you will be rewarded.

Now, to your first question, You should spend your junior year investigating and searching out programs you are interested in, talking to people in the industry about which schools have the best programs, finding out the program's requirements, etc

Then apply to the programs you feel you are the best fit for in the fall (again, contrary to a prior answer, you should never apply to a school more than 1 year before you attend, the early admissions process followed by the Ivy League and U of Cal schools is 10 months prior to entry). YOu should consider writing the SATs/ACTs in June of Junior year though if you want to apply in the fall of senior year and have an answer by Christmas

P.S. I was a University professor for 30+ years so I am very familiar with the application process and spent several years on entry committees

Robert's answer is definitely the best so far. I just want to add that if you apply to one of the Ivies, be sure to pick the one you want and apply early decision since the acceptance rate is a little higher (something close to 30%, which is damn good for these schools). I don't know anything about early decision for california schools, but if you have a solid GPA/SAT combo, I can't see them turning you away.

Also, despite Robert's counterexample, I do think there are a lot of majors that are destined to make less money than the cost of the college experience you need to earn that job, but even so, I think the most important part that you are happy with the choice you make. It's your life and who cares if people don't agree with your career/degree choice. I was hardset on studying math when I started applying to colleges and my family and friends told me how I wouldn't be able to do anything except teach (it's not true at all, but they didn't know any better). I ended up making the choice for myself and am now in graduate school for math and will (hopefully) be a professor in the next ten years or so (gotta do the whole postdoc thing first). The point is people don't always know what you can do with a degree and even if they do, make the choice that'll make you happy, and not necessarily the choice that makes the most money. Because money won't erase how miserable you are you know?

You shouldn't start applying until fall of your senior year, but you really should be looking into colleges right now. Actually, you should be finalizing your choices. I disagree with what the other person said, you CAN make money as a fashion major. All you have to do is want IT. You should try to see if your local community college offers fashion and design courses, or maybe there is a vocational school around you somewhere? You should be pretty confident and sure of your career choice. Make sure you are getting a degree in something you love; it helps if you're good. Are you taking fashion in your high school (if it offers it)? Have you talked to any local fashion store owners or any sales associates about what is big right now? Hit the mall and check out what specific style of fashion you are into. Get a portfolio together, and look into a fashion institute!

Good luck!!!

Start applying for colleges NOW. You should be making your final choices this time next year.

Don't bother applying to college unless you're going to major is something that WILL pay the bills. For example, something in the medical field, pharmacy, or engineering will. Theater, psychology, social work and the like is a waste of resources because you're paying lots more money out than you will ever get back in salary. I don't recommend fashion or modeling as a general rule. A few hit it big time. Most hit the rocks, crash, and burn, and their degree ends up worthless. But every decent engineer makes a great wage.

Too early to apply. That's for next year when you're a senior. This year is for gathering information. I can tell you now, USC
(I assume you mean Univ. of Southern California) will require over a 3.5 GPA and high SAT's.

Im a junior too and after I take the SAT im going to apply for early admission. Someone told me that if you apply early you have a better chance of getting in and they respect it more. Its weird that we're going to be in college soon.

Here is a list of fashion and beauty schools. You should be selecting your schools this year, visiting schools next summer, and applying next fall.

start figuring out what schools you want to apply to.. get information about them.. I started applying to colleges the summer before my senior year.. especially since the colleges i wanted to go to required at least 2 essays each... so it took me awhile to send all my apps in. the earlier you get them in the better.. cause then you know where you are going and not having to rush last minute your senior year. cause the last half of your senior year you want to have it as least stressful as you can
