Obviously nobody's reading the question here. Hotspots are not going to be any use more than 150 - 200 feet from one; that's not what's being asked.

Both Sprint and Cingular offer wireless broadband service. I haven't checked prices lately but they should be a bit better than Verizon's.

Some cellphones can also be used as a wireless modem. Look into that and see what kind of unlimited data service is available on your phone.

Here is a Web site that shows free wireless hotspots across the nation: http://www.wififreespot.com/

There are also many more that aren't listed--like piggybacking on ones that are not publicized as free.

As for the card...Verizon is the only one I've heard of so far. This doesn't mean there aren't others, but it's all I have word on. I spent four months traveling around the U.S. with a laptop with internal wireless--no Verizon service--and the only times I had problems getting online when I was in a rural area.

If your laptop has a wireless modem quite often you can access wireless for free. There are many hot-spots out there that are publicly accessible. Just use your wireless software to search for them. If they are not passworded out you are Online. Good luck, have fun.

I have used mine in 3 states, all you have to do is get near a service that is not security protected and you are home free, most starbucks are hot spots and any business or school.
Why spend 180 bucks when not necessary.

Good Luck,

look for places in NY that have free wifi. many libraries, schools, and coffee shops offer it. i'm sure you can find a wifi map of ny very easily. if you need the convenience of wifi EVERYWHERE you go then you're going to have to pay for it.
