Regardless of brand the wood is moisture retaining and fiberous, the graphite snaps or is allready broken in the shaft and the erasers all make better smudgers.

They grind forever in sharpeners, never reaching a workable point. Is there a quality wood brand left somewhere?

I quit using wood pencils years ago because I think that mechanical pencils hold a point like no other; however, if you have a liking for wooden pencils, I would suggest going to your local art supply store and buying some drawing pencils. Drawing pencils come in different degrees of lead hardness, and they are of much better quality than mass produced pencils. Drawing pencils are more expensive, but apparently in the world of pencils, you get what you pay for.

Interesting. It seems that the quality goes over time. In the 60s and 70s, they were fantastic. In the 80s, some brands of wood became rubbery. Now all brands are poor. Why do people put up with crappy pencils?!!!

Smudging occurs because schools like to get the cheap kind, that's why I buy my own. And about quality wood pencils? Just get mechanical.

I used to hate those soft plastic like pencils when I was in school. You could never get them sharp enough. They said the were #2's , but I don't believe it.

I don't ever have a problem with papermate pencils.... some of them, I agree, are worthless.
