she might want to get a second opinion from another pediatrician. is the boy hearing a lot of adults speaking? a child won't learn words unless it is exposed to them. the boy's hearing should be checked. the pediatrician will know what to do. some children are late in speaking, and they turn out just fine.

It depends on the child. Some speaks later than the others. Some don't speak because they are "selective speakers". This means that they would only speak when they want to. Some chosen not to speak, they felt that there is no need for them to speak because when they want something they would only have to point at it and they would get it. This usually happens to children who has an older siblings.
However! In my own "professional" OPINION as a Daycare Provider, I think that your cousin should request the doctor to allow her son to have a "Speak Therapist" to work with her son. I am NOT saying that her doctors don't know what s/he is doing but through out my experience, I have realized that very frequently doctors seem to over look many things if the parents don't mention it to them. So tell your cousin to talk to the doctor again.

The doctor is right. I have a 2 year old as well an he started to speak more the day he turned 2. Each child develops differently. I know of this little boy who didn't speak until he turned 3! If your cousin is still worried, she should take her son to a specialist. They might suggest speech therapy. Good Luck!

He can listen and follow directions -- but does he ask for anything? How? Does he point? Grunt? use the same syllables for everything?

I'd be less concerned if there is vocalization of some sort - and more than just pointing and crying/screaming to get what he wants. As long as there are signs that there is other vocalization it should be fine. Otherwise I would seek a second opinion.

The following are ESTIMATED milestones -- not to be taken as is, but language usually follows these stages, even if the months aren't the same....

6 months
Vocalization with intonation
Responds to his name
Responds to human voices without visual cues by turning his head and eyes
Responds appropriately to friendly and angry tones

12 months
Uses one or more words with meaning (this may be a fragment of a word)
Understands simple instructions, especially if vocal or physical cues are given
Practices inflection
Is aware of the social value of speech

18 months
Has vocabulary of approximately 5-20 words
Vocabulary made up chiefly of nouns
Some echolalia (repeating a word or phrase over and over)
Much jargon with emotional content
Is able to follow simple commands

24 months
Can name a number of objects common to his surroundings
Is able to use at least two prepositions, usually chosen from the following: in, on, under
Combines words into a short sentence-largely noun-verb combinations (mean) length of sentences is given as 1.2 words
Approximately 2/3 of what child says should be intelligible
Vocabulary of approximately 150-300 words
Rhythm and fluency often poor
Volume and pitch of voice not yet well-controlled
Can use two pronouns correctly: I, me, you, although me and I are often confused
My and mine are beginning to emerge
Responds to such commands as "show me your eyes (nose, mouth, hair)"

I'd take him to another doctor myself. It's possible he has a hearing problem. Most children say some words before the age of 2. Some speak later than others, but he should at least be saying "MaMa" and "bye-bye" by now.

it extremely is an exciting question. i think of in basic terms the verbal words count variety once you're counting thier words. The signs and indicators would be in a different classification. whilst my son went into speech treatment at 27 months previous he spoke approximately 15 words and knew approximately 10 signs and indicators. he now speaks one hundred fifty+ words and is familiar with 50+ signs and indicators. merely be constructive you tell the first practitioner that your new child is bi-lingual by using fact they at the instant are and back extremely speech delayed . it is not that they are "slow" according to se, yet that they've an outstanding variety of recommendations to handle. in case you think of he would be at the back of a sprint developmentally get him into early intervention. The centers are unfastened till age 3. and a few human beings will inform you that speech treatment isn't mandatory till age 3, yet they are incorrect. It helped my son particularly alot, and his ST has a customer who's 10 months previous. he's in speech considering he had no longer began babbling yet. She additionally advised me that some childrens (like those with down syndrome) initiate speech at various months previous by using fact it relatively is totally almost a provided that they might have a speech postpone.

No my 2 yr old neighbor doesnt talk yet either. How much does the mom work with the child ? Does she read to him? The more child and parent interaction helps. When he wants something does she say it and have him repeat it? Thats a good way!
