e coli is a bacterium that can affect the gastric system. It is found usually in hamburger/meat products because it is carried in fecal matter.

Many people got ill in many states (over 20), and it was found that spinach was the carrier -- probably from poorly processed or unsterilized manure.

certain strains of e coli can make people very sick, and even kill them, which is why they took all of the spinach off the market until they could find out who was the producer.

They found the source -- but many companies may sell it under different names, and they are still trying to figure that out.

E coli is a bacteria that usually lives in the intestines of human and animals. Most are relatively harmless but the E coli 0157:H7 strain causes severe diarrhea and kidney damage.

One elderly woman has died from the e-Coli bacteria caused by eating contaminated spinach here in Wisconsin. eColi is found in feces and in the intestines of animals like cattle (but including us, by the way). If it finds its way into the food supply it can be deadly. Using raw manure on fields of spinach will transfer the bacteria to the plants. Washing the vegetable will do nothing to take away the danger. Believe me, you DO NOT want to get this infection.

I battled an eColi infection a couple years ago after visiting our county fair. Lots of people who went there got sick...apparently we visited the goat barn and we pet the goats there and I washed my kids' hands but mine didn't get washed as thoroughly. Oops. It caused bloody diarrhea, cramping, and at least one or two little kids (not mine, thank God!) went into kidney failure from it. I recovered in about a week because I'm a fairly healthy adult, but very young and older, suppressed immune-system folks can really suffer from the infection. It can and does cause death.

I also had an e-Coli infection after having abdominal surgery (appendectomy). The infection developed into an abscess in my peritoneal cavity (abdomen) and it was e-Coli and the strep bacterias. Took me 2 months to recover from it.

In the meantime, if you have any raw or bagged spinach bought at the store, PLEASE don't take a chance at eating it. I'd toss it and wait to eat it again in the future. It's not worth it. You will be so sick if you get infected with it. Trust me!

Take care of yourself.

I know you want points, but when you are finished reading all of these very good answers, go to Google.. Type in
"What is e coli"? Hit "search,"and you will find many many explanations to answer your question. That goes for anything else you have a question about.

Evidently, some 70 or so people have been infected with it in various states in the country, and some have become severely ill, but I don't think anyone has died yet. The suspicion is that they were infected by bagged spinache. So lay off the spinach and get your dark leafy greens from something else for a while.

Bacteria in our food ptoducts makes me sick thinking about it. We should feel safe when we pay good money for food from the store, but that is just not so. It first was in hamburgers at a fast food place. Now it's in spinach.
Just washing food you take home will not make it go away.
How are we to stop this?

Simply put, it's a bacteria that come from feces that got into the water supply that fed (watered) the spinach.
