Let x be the number.
Then (5/6)x - (1/2)x = 6
(5/6)x - (3/6)x = 6
2/6x = 6
x = 18

Translate the problem into an equation.
5/6(x)-1/2(x) = 6

one-half = 1/2
a number = x, what we don't know
subtracted = what you think it would be
five-sixth = 5/6
difference = the answer to a subtraction problem

Now solve for x.

Hope this helps. Good Luck.

Let x be the number that you are looking for.

Then (5/6)x - (1/2)x = 6 should be the algebraic expression of your first sentence. Then, you can combine like terms, so you get

(1/3)x= 6
x = 18

5/6x - .5x = 6 (Multiply all by 6)
5x - 3x = 36 (Subtract left side)
2x = 36 (Divide both sides by 2)
x = 18 (Substitute back in for checking)
15 - 9 = 6
