look for the IP address. Depending on your mail server, it is very easy or a little treackier. On AOL, just click to get more details about the sender, which includes the IP address.
then it is like a reversed phonebook, to know whom it belongs to

Dear
In Internet every computer has an ID called IP Address
whenever you are doing anything in Internet the IP address is always forwarded.
this is true in the case of e-mail too

technically speaking you can identify who send you the mail by verifying the IP address of the sender from the mail header.

but for a non-tech person this is not an easy job

see the full mail address and for example if it is
ram@sift.com
go to the site www.sify.com
search for ram@sift.com or ram
most of the e-mail service providers have a list of profiles search able.

good luck

You will need to practice. The e-mail header will contain all the information regarding the mail servers it went through to get to you. These can be spoofed however. I would practice sending yourself an e-mail from one machine and opening it on another, then look at the header information to learn how the information presents itself to you. You will most likely never get right back to the originating machine, but it will tell you the mail server that handled the original e-mail, once you know this you can contact the server admin and request the information. If it's AOL, Yahoo, or other on-line e-mail provider they will not give you this information without a court order.

Good luck!
