I just found out that a good friend from High School died in his sleep last night.
We are 41.
I am incredibly sad...

The mind has a way of protecting us from "losing it" and when we experience numbness (shock) and denial are the first stages of loss.

Speak to someone who cares about you. Express the loss so that you may grieve. Which is the second stage. The rest will naturally come. With time and only with time you will feel better.

It is good to grieve because it reminds us that we are all mortal and need to loOK at the people we have in our lives. It reminds us to show these people "we care". We forget sometimes how much a hug, a touch, a call, and smile means.

It's going to be ok. Give yourself timmme and share your feelings.

sorry about your loss, I like the answer "INSIGHT" gave.
I feel numb when something devasting such as that has happened.

I have also felt numb when I was suffering from depression.
I would eat to feel something and now I understand why depressed people eat when they are feeling "down"
I'm on meds for it now.

You need to have a cry and a scream let it out!
Get angry and exhaust your emotions!
and once your done, remember the good things dont dwell on the past let him go,
You are 41 now, take this as a sign to live and be happy.
Do things you've never done before, and think of your friend,
thats what keeps him alive...
the memories and love you had for him... he will be with you always :)

It's normal. It's as if you're seeing your own mortality thrown under a bus. Not a pretty thing.

One of the only sucky things about getting older, is that the people we love die. I lost 17 people from my life in less than a year...not too long ago. Some young. Some old. Some who were very special to me. Some who weren't. It makes you realize this is the only life you have...and you need to tell the people you love that you love them...every chance you get.

It doesn't get easier. I am so sorry for your loss.

1st off, I am sorry about your friends passing. I too had a friend from HS pass on a few years back, granted we were not that close, but it affected me nevertheless, I am sure in time you will feel fine again; Just try and remember him for who he was, do not focus on the fact that you are both the same age, perhaps there were medical factors involved, that you are unaware of. Take care and know that the numbness shall pass.

Your just going through the natural stages of the grief process. I'm sure you've heard of them--like shock, denial, anger, grief and resolution. Everyone goes through each of these stages at different levels of intensity and at their own schedule.

Pull your loved ones around you (i.e. your support system) and ride it out. Don't be afraid to feel anything, and don't let anyone tell you to just buck up. You have to feel these things to resolve them.

it is okay to feel that way and you don't have to pretend that u are happy or you are over it already...if you feel bad then feel bad..it's only natural that u feel sad..anyways...think of the goodtimes you guys had...or bad times..anyways..his suffering of life is over and be happy for him for that. and Thank god for taking good care of him and to look after him well as he was a good friend. And i gues he would've wanted all his good friends to keep on living no matter what..

Numb is how I feel when I hear terrible news as well. The other feelings follow.

Of course it's normal. It proves to you that you are emotional and a good friend. Emotional is good. You are not made of ice. You have feelings.
