The quote is just saying that when dealing with our environment, we need to be concerned with the effects our actions will have for future generations. We need to think about what kind of world we will be leaving for our children. In particular, at the rate we're using our non-renewable resources, at what point will there be none left? When do we start conserving resources so we don't leave future generations scrambling to fullfill their energy requirements. As far as species conservation, the progression of global warming is having a serious impact on a number of species namely the polar bear. Their habitat is melting, and their hunting season is growing shorter. At what point do we need to stop destroying their environment so our children will live in a world with polar bears. On the other hand, do polar bears really matter? Do we owe it to future generations to save polar bears or any other species threatened by environmental changes? Hope this gives you a little food for thought for whatever assignment you're working on.

First, you have to understand the quote.
It means that when the people of today neglect the environment and fail to do preventative maintenance in taking care of our planet, it's future generations who suffer.
An example with your own body would be if you drink lots of soda, eat a lot of candy, and enjoy eating sweets for your own pleasure and don't brush your teeth.
You can enjoy all those sweets now, but you're going to pay for it later in life when your teeth fall out and you have to wear dentures.
In regards to the quote:
- Parents = You today
- Children = You 20 or 30 years from now
- Abusing the Environment = Eating Sweets and Sugar
- Cleaning Up the Environment = Not Brushing your Teeth
- Pollution, Smog, Global Warming = Cavities, Teeth Rotting
Important Responsibilities:
SPECIES CONSERVATION: Protecting the Wildlife is important because of the Ecosystem. If you kill off certain animals or plants that are critical to the Food Chain, certain animals will starve to death. When those animals starve to death, the animals that feed on those animals will starve to death.
It goes all the way up to the Food Chain and eventually affects humans.
HABITAT CONSERVATION: This also affects the Food Chain, which is why those two are intertwined.
There's an article dated 9/15/2006 that says that Polar Bears are drowning because the Arctic is thawing.
http://news.scotsman.com/latest.cfm?id=1367342006
Because Polar Bears are heavy and the ice is getting thinner, the ice is starting to fragment and you've got polar bears that are caught on all these ice islands that eventually melt and then drown.
You wouldn't want to be a polar bear right now. It would suck because your living space is shrinking and you don't have enough Environmentalists lobbying for your interests in Congress.
Drowning polar bears is a terrible result of Global Warming where the Animal Kingdom is suffering because of Human Negligence and Political Laziness when it comes to curbing some of its practices.
RECYCLING: Making use of items such as old newspapers helps cut down on cutting down more trees. When the old growth trees are cut down, certain birds and animals no longer have anyplace to live.
When people continue to consume, they eat up everything and don't give back.
In "The Matrix," you see Agent Smith go through his monologue of how he can't stand humans. He says that humans exhibit the same traits of a virus.
They "infect" everything, consume all the resources, and then move on to the next resource once they can't extract anything more out of a dried up resource. Eventually you'll run out of resources.
CONSERVATION OF NATURAL RESOURCES: Hybrid Vehicles are a solution because it uses less fossil fuels and relies more on electricity. This slows down the consumption of gas as well as the amount of pollution in the form of smog.
RESPONSIBILITY OF HUMAN SOCIETY: This is an important issue when it comes to saving the Planet from cannibalizing itself ot where there's nothing left.
Humans like to pride themselves as being the superior to other animals they share the Planet with. However, when it comes to accepting responsibility for the mess they've left behind, no one wants to clean up.
We all know it's not the animals who have been leaving a mess and ruining the environment. There was a delicate balance that was maintained four hundreds of thousands and millions of years before humans evolved.
It's only recently through Industrial Revolution and creation of technology that has harmful side effects toward the Planet that we've started to see the Earth develop problems that will affect the quality of life for future generations.
It's important that people of today understand this so that they can make an effort to slow down these effects and come up with alternative measures that will protect the environment and provide the people of tomorrow with a better future and Planet to live on.

Well, the connection is that what we do now on earth will affect future generations (as in, our children). So, if we deplete every natural resource on earth now, future people will suffer. Thus, conservation and recycling now, will make their lives better in the future.
