Because there is no such thing as a "friend," there are only "aquaintences" and "allies." Aquaintences are people you just know by name or face, and don't really know much more about them. Co-workers and neighbors fall into this catagory. Allies fight your battles, take your side, and usually are in more frequent contact. F*ck-buddies and gamers usually fall into this catagory.

Because some people truly are your friend. These are the ones that will tell you if you have a booger haning from your nose as opposed to the one that says they are your friend but would let you walk around all day with the thing hanging there.
