It means that they value pleasure above all other virtues.

While the poster above has given a pretty good picture of the way it is used, it feels a bit judgemental, and the word itself implies no judgement, as pleasure, within that system, has high moral value, so a hedonist would be restrained from doing those things which are not pleasurable.

More often, today, it is used to speak of a party animal who cares about no one, but seeking pleasure does not mean one must ignore others or ignore responsibility, but must find pleasure in it!

Hedonism and morality are not mutually exclusive. In fact, hedonism is a type of morality.

Love, intelectual pursuits, even altruism can be hedonistic. It's not just physical things that bring pleasure.
