He must have been really brave to have gone into the unknown. He had a wife and child, but he thought about humanity first. He was deeply religious. He must have gone through a lot in the first voyage... I read that his was a far more brave trip than the first time we went to the moon, because we knew so much more and were far better prepared than Chris.

He was not a hero. Columbus went on a mission to rip off whomever he could find, to enrich the Spanish Crown.
His efforts at stealing gold and other valuables, enslaving the native peoples of the western continent, and publicizing his exploits so that others would do the same make him an anti-hero.
Because of Columbus, I assume that any alien civilization that comes to this planet will be similarly evil-minded, and therefore I would never welcome strangers with the innocence and curiosity that Columbus so callously exploited in the people he met here.

If you're an European I understand that you call him a hero. a brave man? Yes. But not a hero. Although I'm the result of European colonization and the two languages I master are European, Columbus played a cuestionable role in history. I supposse that the Dutch bankers who financed his adventures were the happiest of all. To them he was a real hero.

First of all, Columbus didn't discover America...he encountered it. Secondly, his accidently setting foot on 'New World' soil doesn't make him a hero either. But there are heroic things Columbus did ......he almost sailed blindly into the west seeking another route to the east, he had tremendous abilites as a leader and sailor, etc. There are others who were great heroes of exploration as well.....Prince Enrique of Portugal, Henry Hudson of England, Vasco de Gama of Portugal. All are great

there have only been a few times in history where we have what is called a paradigm shifts. Christopher Columbus' discovery was not only economy advantageous to the old world, know as Europe, but it changed forever man's erroneous belief of the world being flat, to that of the world being ROUND. In a space of time this was like a split second. Can you imagine the force of that reality for everyone on the earth at that time. Its awesome.!!!

"He is a hero because he had the bravery to explore the other side of the world. "
He may have had bravery enough to explore...but he's no hero...he arrived in the "new World" purely by chance, killed many natives in both unintentionally through disease, as well as intentionally...often in very gruesome ways...
He may not have even been the first European to set foot in the new world...it is still widely believed that Leif Erikson (sorry about spelling) may have landed as many as 500 years prior to columbus' voyage in what he called "vinland" (thought to be present day Nova Scotia.
Columbus a hero?...I think not.

I don't. He had many native Americans killed just because he could.
The native Americans did get back at them in a small way. They had a venereal disease that didn't effect them much. The Europeans didn't have any natural immunity to VD, and it killed some of them years later after it spread to Europe from the sailors.

The Native Americans were here THOUSANDS of years before Columbus, and what he did was open the way for them to be thrown off their land and/or killed by Europeans. Nice job, Chris!

I don't consider him a "hero". Sure, he had guts, he was smart, and had confidence. But he's not a hero.
A lot of people on here are going to think he was a vanquishing, arrogant plunderer. If you were of Native American descent your perspective might be quite different.

No he was no hero and he started the first battle against the american natives and it went down hill from there. Look how much of the indigenous history was ruined and plundered in the Americas by the Spainish all for greed. I think Christopher was no hero and he was not the first European to discover the Americas the Vikings were.

I don't consider anyone who murders a population of natives via disease and violence a hero.
Besides, the Vikings (Scandinavians) 'discovered' the new world before Columbus did.
