It makes a better buffet. Do you realize how boring it would be to just have O-positive, "all-the-time"!!! Sometimes, we just need a break from the monotony, like a nice Chardonnay, some aged Cheddar and a RH-Negative! Bon Appetit!!!

For the same reason that they have different skin colours, hair & eye colours etc - mutation has caused genetic variation. There are many different blood groups, of which the most (?) important are A, B, O. These are due to antigens on the red blood cells. There are three forms of these antigens - A,B, and O. People either have A, B, O or both A & B - giving the groups A, B, O and AB. The different antigens are produced by a gene now called "I" which exists in three forms (alleles). If you give a patient the wrong blood group, the blood cells will clump together (agglutinate) - and clumps of blood cells in the blood vessels won't do the patient any good at all! For a planned transfusion, other blood groups will have to be considered, not just A,B,O.

Later in the blood cell's life it loses it's DNA; that's how the different blood types are born. Now, on to the blood types: you know there are 4 main blood types: A, B, AB, and O. The reason there are so many different blood types is because the blood types have different types or No's. of antigens. For example, A has different antigens, B has different antigens, AB have A and B antigens, and O has no antigens at all. That's why doctors have to CORRECTLY match the blood types together according to the antigens in the recipient's blood type, except for O blood, it has no antigens, that's why it's the universal donor. If you mix the blood types or antigens w/ a different blood type or antigen the body sees it as a foreign being and attacks it and results in death of that person.

Some people may gripe about Wikipedia urls being copypasted into answers, but in cases like this, it's needed. The answer to your question is insanely long when fully explained. Go here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blood_types

The article has explanations about the different types, plus illustrations of it.
