I had a stool that was normal sized and shaped, normal consistency, but it was very dark, like close to black, but still very dark brown. Is there anything wrong or is it just something I ate changed the color?

If you are taking a iron pill this will cause that otherwise it sounds like It could possibly be blood in the stool. Go to your doctor to be sure.

A lot of times when you eat really fatty foods your liver needs to release a lot of bile in order to break down the fat so it makes the stool really dark. Although if you are having bleeding in your intestines your stool will turn black. If the stool is black then go see a MD, but if just really dark brown then observe that when you return to your normal diet that it eventually does lighten.

Black stool could be blood. I would see a doctor asap. If you feel weak or dizzy go to emerg. Could be internal bleeding...either an ulcer or something even worse. May be nothing but don't take the chance. A stool sample and simple blood test will tell plenty.

blood up in the intestine, but if it is blood the stool might be sort of sticky too. if you otherwise feel fine then just keep an eye on yourself until the next stool and try to remember what you ate two days ago. If you have another problem in the intestinal region you might want to see the doctor fairly quickly.

Let me first state that I am not a medically qualified person, but this is something that you should mention to your doctor.

It could be something as simple as you passing blood in your stool, sometimes from a bleeding ulcer, but can also indicate much more serious things.

Do yourself a big favour and get it checked out ... now!

That's right. Stop talking to us here, and pick up the phone to make an appointment.

I took my son to the doctor once because he kept having green stools. He said it was from the dye in kool aid especially the grape. He told me that if it is light color then you worry. I was always under the impression if it was dark that was bad but I don't know. If it happens again contact your doctor.

ALL vets have an emergency vet on call for them on the weekends... at least everyone I ever went to. I would leave a message for the vet asking him to contact you now, and tell you where to take the dog. If you think it is bleeding do something, if you think it can wait, then wait. But DECIDE and not just because it is sunday. If it were monday what would you do? if you would goto the vet , then go. good luck

It could be something you ate, or it could mean you have a GI bleed. Keep inspecting your BM's and if it stays black or if it becomes "tarry", call your doc.

Also, certain meds can make your BM's look this way, like iron supplements and certain vitamins.

Lots of Iron will do this to your stool. Your pee can smell is you eat asparagus.
If this continues, go see the doc.
