Newborns are very VERY sleepy all the time. At about 5 or 6 weeks (can be earlier, can be later) they often suddenly become much more alert and are awake for longer. There is nothing wrong at all with your neice.

"As a guide, many babies sleep 14-20 hours a day in the first weeks" Child and Youth Health (from the link below)

I once read an article that said if a newborn baby woke every hour they would only stay awake for about 2-3 minutes.. so yea they sleep a lot.. which is just the greatest thing in the world.. My baby is 2 1/2 months now and it still seems like he sleeps all the time, he just wakes up to look around and poop!! and of course eat!! LOL! I just love babies..

I have a 4 month old girl. Newborns sleep a lot, but usually in small bursts throughout the day. My girl will take 4 naps a day for between 30 minutes to an hour. So the question is whether or not you're visiting during her naptime, or if she is really always sleeping. I've read that newborns can sleep up to 16 hours a day.

Hope that helps.

That's all they do for the next month or so. I have 4, she is blessed if that's all it is doing. Eat, sleep and poop. A newborn feeds Every 3-4 hrs if bottled fed, 2-3 if not. They will sleep on average 8+hrs in between feedings. It is normal. As the baby gets older the sleeping will decrease.

Very normal! Babies need a lot of sleep they grow so fast! They sleep about 15 hours a day. They triple their weight in the first year that is a lot of hard work. Don't worry before you know it she'll be running around causing havoc and you'll be wishing she was alseep more! Congrats on being an aunt!

Just wait until she's old enough to stay awake for longer periods. Right now, she probably wakes long enough to eat, look at mom or dad for a few minutes and go back to sleep. My son was the same way up through his second month. The day he was born, he slept for 16 hours after birth and refused to wake up for anyone even after the nurses tried every known trick to wake him (including exposing his entire body to air).

Newborn babies do three things:

1) Eat

2) Poop

3) Sleep

That's a good thing. Newborns are supposed to sleep... up to 16 hours a day. As long as she's feeding and gaining weight, she should sleep. Not to worry... you'll see as she gets older, she'll start to sleep less.

Perfectly normal. The baby will sleep most of the time up to three months.
