No. It's one of the failings of humankind, however.
I think you're seeing a revolution happening, but it's in some ways a subtle one.
Average people are communicating globally about their lives, politics, and religious persuasions, thanks to the Internet. Many of them inevitably come to the realization that people in other countries, from other walks of life, have very different lives, and very different viewpoints. Still, despite the differences, it's impossible for most not to recognize that we all have common ground. We all love, laugh, work, fear, hope, and dream. Most of us feel compassion and empathy for others, particularly those who are struggling so hard to survive against forces that simply overwhelm them.
Amid this global recognition of our brotherhood, there is another realization. We all have the ability to impact one another, for good or ill. In a world suddenly so small, and so in need of help, the time is coming when we will all have to get on the same page, and work together, for all of us to continue.
Extreme politics, extreme religious views, and extreme violence threaten all of us. Lack of respect for law and order threaten the societies in which we live.
The intolerance you see in the USA right now is because our politics are too extreme, our religions are too extreme, and our laws are being threatened and eroded from within and without by both.
That can't be allowed to continue. We have to reach a moderate middle ground on all fronts. So does the rest of the world. No use pointing fingers at other countries; they are no more or less to blame for the problems they have than we are for ours.
It doesn't take a genius to realize that moderation and compromise is the only way to achieve tolerance, not just in any one country, but globally. We have to interact, and we just can't afford to tolerate extremists to gain power, whose views lead ultimately to violence and destruction.
Americans are pretty spoiled and indulged when it comes to being able to hold extremist views, and act on them. We're protected by our laws when we do so, within the framework of those laws.
What's happening is that some of us are starting to learn that while those laws are very important, to be preserved against the day when we can use them responsibly, it's just as important to resist the people who currently use them to cause harm to others.
W're getting more intolerant because we must. Someday, if we all survive this high-tech era of violence and intolerance, most people will be smart enough to recognize the value of working together. I'm not talking about being cookie-cutter copies of each other, but simply reaching a stage of human development and collective wisdom where we become self-moderating.

No, it's the way of ignorant people!
There is intolerance of those that are different all over the world . . . just as there are ignorant people all over the world. It's not an "American" thing.
