The fact you think they have low self esteem could be the problem. You may not recognise when you are denting their confidence but you must let them grow up at their own rate and not over suffocate them and mother them. Let them find out lifes hardships and downfalls and they will learn and be able to pick themselves up all by themselves. Be there for them but let them make decisions and happiness and self esteem will shine through

I wonder. I have low self-esteem and so does my son. But, my husband is very optimistic and and is happy almost all of the time. So, it makes me wonder. I too have tried hard to build my son's self-confidence to no avail. I sometimes wonder what went on at school that he never told me about. Maybe it happened there. Maybe it's just his personality.

I don't know if can be passed down genetically, but kids live what they learn, so if you have low self esteem and they notice it, they may also take after you in that aspect of life.

I think it can be passed down, whether you are aware of it or not. The children watch how things effect you and how you handle things. They do not understand all the problems and situations that you encounter and may not understand why you reacted that way but subconsciously they notice. It is so hard to instill self-confidence in children with all the outside influences. Just remember that you are their life long cheer leader and whether they acknowledge it or not your opinion counts to them.

I did not think that it was possible but it actually is. I was a depressed teen and i had a kid who was much more popular than i ever was and i thought he had it all but i found out that he was a depressed teen also. Kids are very intuitive and they can pick up on so many things.

it might not be possible to be pased down genetically. but if a kid watches how u act, they might pick up on it, and act the same way.
